The inbetweeny stage of rebranding doesn’t need to be awkward

When Girls Not Brides refreshed its brand to match a bold new global strategy, its digital platform needed to follow – and the timeline wasn’t messing around. We delivered a full website rebrand across a 5,000-page platform in five weeks, on time and without disruption.

TL;DR: The top takeaways

5,000-page website rebrand in five weeks

A strategic lift and shift of Girls Not Brides’ new visual identity, applied compliantly and to brand guidelines throughout its existing web platform.

No rebuilding under pressure

Taking the new brand live on existing architecture gave the team room to move forward, ready for a bigger digital evolution when the time’s right.

A little background

Founded in 2011, Girls Not Brides is a global partnership of more than 1,400 civil society organisations across nearly 100 countries, dedicated to ending child marriage. Registered as an independent charity in 2013, its web platform is the movement’s central hub – carrying close to 5,000 pages of research, resources, news, and advocacy tools for members and partners worldwide.

Cursive has supported the Girls Not Brides platform since early 2024. In that time we’ve made the site’s backend easy to work with, integrated AI-powered translation across three languages, and rebuilt key interactive features to better suit the team’s needs.

The challenge

A new strategy that needed a new look, fast

In 2025, Girls Not Brides began shaping its new 2026–2030 strategy – a real shift in focus and ambition. The team came to us with a rebrand led by an external creative agency. Our task was to take the finished brand assets and make them live on the website.

The launch date was March 2026. That left roughly five weeks to cover design, feedback, building, testing and deployment, with no scope for a structural rebuild. And while we’d already worked to reduce the number of templates, there were still more than 30 across the site. Every template, block type, and component needed to carry the new brand identity.

The solution

A bold rebrand, not a long rebuild

Girls Not Brides didn’t need a new website. It needed the new brand live in time for its launch. We scoped the project as a deliberate lift and shift: applying the new visual identity to the existing site architecture without disrupting the content, structure, or editorial workflows the team relied on every day.

That clarity – and the flexibility of Wagtail – is what made the five-week turnaround achievable.

How we did it

Feasibility first

Once we had the brand assets, we started with a feasibility study to work out what was achievable within the budget available. Some changes were quick wins, some were more involved, and a handful needed significant work. The aim was to set realistic expectations while being as ambitious as we could.

New design against existing templates

From there we moved into design – working through how the new visual identity would apply to the existing templates and presenting options to the Girls Not Brides team for review. We already knew the site’s architecture inside out, which helped us move quickly without surprises.

Apply, test, repeat

We worked through each template and block type in turn: typography, colour palette, spacing, navigation, headers, footers, imagery treatments, iconography, every tiny detail. The website rebrand brief had set a high bar for accessibility and inclusivity, specifying WCAG compliance and usability across global contexts and disabilities. We tested as we went, using specialist tools to ensure different features still met our strict standards.

A platform ready to carry a movement

The new brand went live in March 2026, on schedule. The charity's central hub – nearly 5,000 pages of research, resources and advocacy tools reaching partners in almost 100 countries – now carries the identity the 2026–2030 strategy was built on.

Just as importantly, the team got the website redesign they needed without losing a quarter to a rebuild. The site stayed stable, the editorial workflows they rely on every day never skipped a beat, and the architecture is solid enough to take the bigger digital evolution whenever they choose.

What we learned

You don’t need to throw your old web platform out and rebuild from scratch just because you’re rebranding. For Girls Not Brides, separating the two – reskin now, rebuild when the time is right – meant the website rebrand landed on schedule, without disruption, and there’s now a clear plan for what comes next. Because the architecture was solid, applying a new visual identity to an existing platform was achievable without touching things that didn’t need touching. Wagtail, as always, makes it possible.
